Welcome to Stockholm, the Venice of the North. Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is a destination often overlooked by Americans visiting Europe.  But Stockholm is worth a visit with its rich history mixed with a comfortable modernity that Americans have grown accustomed to.

The beauty of Stockholm comes from being situated on fourteen islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea.  Gamla Stan, or Old Town, is the historic center where you can walk the narrow cobblestone roads and admire the architecture of historical churches and buildings.  Relax in Stortorget, the Big Square, have some lunch and visit the Nobel Museum.

Visit Kungliga Sluttet, the Royal Palace, finished in 1754. Watch the changing of the guards and go below the palace to explore the Royal Armory and the Treasury.

An afternoon at Vasamuseet, the Vasa Museum, is a must for all visitors to Stockholm. See the restored warship Vasa that sank on her maiden voyage in 1628 and was recovered from the Baltic in 1961.

Skansen, the world’s largest open-air museum, is a great place for the entire family.  Historical farmhouses, schools and churches from all over Sweden have been moved to Skansen.  Learn how food food, medicines, and glass were made by craftsmen in authentic period costumes. The zoo at Skansen is a favorite for children.

Another attraction for the entire family is Gröna Lund, Stockholm’s own amusement park.  Situated on the water with rides for the young and old, Gröna Lund has an old-fashioned quality that all will enjoy. In addition, it is where many famous musicians have chosen to perform when touring Scandinavia, including Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Lee Lewis, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana, John Lennon, Jason Mraz and many others.

Outside the city of Stockholm, more than 30,000 islands make up the Stockholm archipelago. Take one of the many ferry rides through the archipelago to see the beautiful waters and do some island hopping of your own.

We hope you join Brooke’s Travel Co. to explore Stockholm for yourself.
